One night, after winter came,Gertas grandmother tells the two the story of the evil Snow Queen. The two young people joke about her , until the evil Snow Queen appears outside and blasts open the window, turning Kais heart to ice and making him hateful and mean towards Gerta.

The lonely and bitter Snow Queen then kidnaps Kai and takes him far away to her Palace. Devoted Gerta waits throughout the lonely winter for him and then begins to bravely search for him as Spring begins.
